Why Isn't Voice Chat Working?
Fortnite voice chat issues usually stem from wrong default audio device, voice chat disabled in settings, microphone permissions denied, or outdated audio drivers.
Step-by-Step Fix
Enable Voice Chat in Fortnite
Open Fortnite → Settings → Audio. Make sure Voice Chat is set to On. Set Voice Chat Channel to Party or Game. Set Voice Method to Open Mic or adjust Push to Talk key.
Set Correct Default Audio Device
Right-click the speaker icon in your Windows taskbar → Sound Settings. Under Input, make sure your correct microphone is selected. Under Output, select your correct headset/speakers.
Check Microphone Permissions
Go to Windows Settings → Privacy → Microphone. Make sure "Allow apps to access your microphone" is turned On. Scroll down to ensure the Epic Games Launcher or Fortnite has permission.
Update Audio Drivers
Open Device Manager → Sound, video and game controllers. Right-click your audio device → Update driver → Search automatically. Restart your PC after updating.
Disable Exclusive Mode
Right-click speaker icon → Sound Settings → Device Properties → Additional device properties → Advanced tab → Uncheck "Allow applications to take exclusive control" for both input and output devices.
For the best voice chat experience, use a dedicated gaming headset with a built-in microphone rather than laptop speakers and mic. Gaming headsets with USB or 3.5mm connections have better noise cancellation and are recognized more reliably by games than Bluetooth audio devices, which often cause latency and compatibility issues.
